What Do The Codes On A Maytag Washer Mean?
Maytag lists 11 codes for its top load HE washers and 11 for its front load washers, and each comes with a first step you can try yourself. For several, that step is as simple as a hose, a faucet or a lighter load. A code that comes back after that step is where a diagnosis starts.
| Code | What Maytag says | Clear it yourself? | What a diagnosis checks next |
|---|---|---|---|
| drnNot draining | The washer isn't draining properly. | Maytag says drn can sometimes be an installation problem. We'd check the drain hose first, for kinks and for how it sits in the standpipe. | The drain pump and its filter, the drain hose and standpipe connection, then the control board. |
| F# E# or F##System error | A system error code, shown as F and a number. | Press START/PAUSE once to clear it and again to restart. If the code stays, Maytag says to contact them or schedule service, and a diagnosis is the next step. | The control board and its wiring, then whichever system the number points to, such as the motor, the water inlet valve or the drain pump. |
| HCHoses reversed | The hot and cold inlet hoses are connected backwards. | Turn off the water supply first, then swap the hoses if they're reversed and run another cycle. | The water inlet valve and its screens if the hoses are right and the code stays, then the control board. |
| LdLLid not locking | The lid isn't locking. | Look for items caught under the lid and for detergent buildup around the lid lock. | The lid lock and lid switch, the wiring to them, then the control board. |
| LdULid stays locked | The lid is stuck locked. | Take anything off the top of the washer, such as a laundry basket, and try again. | The lid lock mechanism and its wiring, then the control board. |
| LF / Lo FL / F8 E1Slow to fill | The washer is taking too long to fill. | Open both water supply faucets all the way. Maytag adds that hot and cold water must both be supplied to the washer. | The water inlet valve and its screens, the fill hoses and the pressure switch that reads the water level. |
| lidLid left open | The lid was left open during the cycle. | Close the lid. After more than 10 minutes open, the cycle resets and drains, so restart it without adding detergent. | The lid switch and its wiring, if the code shows with the lid closed. |
| OfbLoad out of balance | The load is out of balance. | Let the washer continue first, since it's running a routine to correct the balance. If the dial is flashing and the washer has stopped, spread the load evenly around the washplate, close the lid and press START/PAUSE. | The suspension, the leveling feet and the tub bearings. |
| OLLoad too large | The load is too large for the washer. | Take some items out and use HE detergent. | The motor and its wiring, the basket drive parts, then the control board. |
| PFPower failure | A power failure interrupted the cycle. | Touch and hold START to restart the cycle, or press POWER to clear the display. | Only if PF keeps showing with no outage behind it: the power cord and outlet, then the control board. |
| SudToo many suds | The washer detected excessive suds. | Use HE detergent only. | The drain pump and drain hose, then the pressure switch, when the suds aren't the cause. |
| drnNot draining | The washer isn't draining properly.Clear it yourself: Maytag says drn can sometimes be an installation problem. We'd check the drain hose first, for kinks and for how it sits in the standpipe.Diagnosis checks: The drain pump and its filter, the drain hose and standpipe connection, then the control board. |

| Code | What Maytag says | Clear it yourself? | What a diagnosis checks next |
|---|---|---|---|
| LOC or LCControl Lock on | Control Lock is active. | Touch Control Lock on the panel to turn it off. | Nothing to diagnose if the lock was simply on. A panel that ignores your touch afterward points to the touch panel and the control board. |
| dETCartridge not detected | The washer can't detect the detergent cartridge. | Take the cartridge out and seat it again. | The cartridge bay and its sensor wiring, then the control board. |
| IntCycle interrupted | The cycle was paused or canceled. | Press pause or cancel twice and the power button once. The washer can take 20 to 30 minutes to stop spinning and drain. | The drain pump and drain hose, then the door lock, if the washer won't finish after the wait. |
| rL or F34Items in the drum | The washer found items in the drum during a Clean Washer cycle. | Take everything out of the drum before the Clean Washer cycle. | With the drum empty and the code still showing, the control board and the sensors wired to it. |
| Sud or SdToo many suds | The washer detected too many suds. | Use HE detergent. Maytag also says to switch from "no splash" or "easy pour" chlorine bleach to regular bleach, and to check the drain hose. | The drain pump and filter, the drain hose, and the dispenser path that feeds detergent in. |
| F5 E2Door not locking | The door isn't locking properly. | Check for clothing or anything else blocking the door. | The door lock and latch, the wiring harness to them, then the control board. |
| F7 E1Motor speed error | The washer is having trouble sensing the motor's speed. | Confirm the shipping bolts were removed and the washer isn't overloaded. Maytag lists both checks. | The drive motor and its speed sensing, the motor wiring, then the control board. |
| F8 E1 or LO FLLow water flow | Water is reaching the washer too slowly. | Make sure the house water supply is on and the inlet hoses aren't kinked, and take out any anti-flood devices in the water line. | The inlet valve screens, the water inlet valve itself and the sensor that reads the water level. |
| F8 E2Dispenser problem | A problem in the dispenser system. | Pull the dispenser drawer and clear any clog. | The dispenser's water path and the valve that feeds it, then the control board. |
| F9 E1Slow to drain | Draining took longer than expected, usually over 8 minutes. | Make sure the drain hose isn't kinked. The standpipe should be 39 to 96 inches high, the hose should form a U shape, and too many suds slow draining too. | The drain pump and the filter ahead of it, then the sensor that tracks the water level. |
| Other F# E#Other error | Any other code in the F and E pattern. | Unplug the washer for 5 minutes and plug it back in. If the code returns, Maytag says to contact them so a technician can diagnose the washer, and a diagnosis is the next step. | Whichever system the code names, starting with the control board and its wiring. |

Maytag notes that these lists may not cover every code for your model, so check your owner's manual for the full set.
If Maytag's step clears the code, your $100 stays in your pocket. If the code comes back, tell us exactly what the display showed, because the technician starts with the system that code names.
We repair Maytag as an independent company, along with every other major appliance brand.

What Does Maytag Washer
Repair Cost?
Maytag washer repair starts at $100, a diagnostic fee you pay when you book to hold your weekday appointment. It covers the visit and a full diagnosis from an experienced tech, and what the diagnosis finds sets which of three outcomes you get.
If we find nothing wrong, you get your $100 back.
Nothing more to pay
Sometimes the fix is a small adjustment, like leveling a washer that walks across the floor. When that's the whole job, the $100 is the whole bill.
Booking plus completion
A standard repair comes to $225 total: the $100 from booking plus $125 when the work is done. That's one flat repair price, almost always far less than a new washer.
Exact quote first
When a special-order part is needed, the technician diagnoses and our office prices the exact part for your washer model, then sends you the quote. With your approval, we book a separate visit for the repair.
The whole breakdown is on our appliance repair cost in Baltimore page, and the repair-or-replace quiz weighs your washer's age against the repair cost.
Why Won't My Maytag Washer
Drain, Spin Or Fill?
When a Maytag washer won't drain, spin or fill and the display shows a code, Maytag's own steps start with the hose, the faucet, the lid and the load. A washer with no code gets the same checks, then a diagnosis.
-
Maytag washer won't drain
A top load washer showing drn isn't draining properly, and Maytag says that can sometimes be an installation problem. A front load washer with F9 E1 took longer than expected to drain, so check the drain hose, the standpipe height and how many suds it's making. If those check out, a diagnosis moves on to the drain pump and its filter.
-
Maytag washer won't spin
On a top load washer, Ofb means the load is out of balance and OL means it's too large, so spread it out or take items out. A front load washer that shows F7 E1 needs the shipping bolts confirmed out and the drum checked for overload. A code that comes back on a light, balanced load calls for a look at the suspension, the motor and the bearings.
-
Maytag washer won't fill
LF, Lo FL and F8 E1 all mean the washer is filling too slowly, and Maytag's first step is to open both faucets fully, since hot and cold water must both be supplied. Hard water leaves mineral scale on a washer's inlet screens, private wells in Carroll County can carry sediment and minerals, and wells in the Frederick Valley's limestone can be much harder, so those screens are worth a look. Our appliance maintenance checklist puts a hose and fitting check on a quarterly schedule.
-
Lid or door won't lock
LdL means a top load washer's lid isn't locking, so look for items caught under it and for detergent buildup. LdU means the lid stays locked, and Maytag's step is to take anything off the top, like a laundry basket. On a front load washer, F5 E2 flags a door that isn't locking, and the first check is for anything blocking it; a lock that still won't catch goes to a diagnosis.
-
Leaking or shaking
Maytag's code lists have no entry for a leak, so start with where the water shows up: the hose connections, the drain hose and, on a front load washer, the door seal. Shaking starts with leveling the washer and spreading out the load, and on a front load washer it also means confirming the shipping bolts are out. A leak that returns or a shake that survives leveling needs a diagnosis, and sometimes leveling is the whole job.

Brian was extremely helpful, and professional he fixed my dryer issue in a quick timely fashion and explained in detailed what the issue was
Unfortunately I have had a very bad experience with this company. They were assigned by my home warranty company to fix a problem that I have with my washer and dryer machine. In the first visit the technician had an accident and drop water on my floor that was not waterproof l. The floor got damaged with bubbles around the machine. still I let them continue doing their work and in the second visit the technician scratched so deeply the washing machine. I contacted the company bc they must take responsibility for the damage done to my property things but so far things doesn’t look good. I will update my review in a couple days to let you know how things are going with this company.
They came out under a repair request for First American Home warranty to fix my washer and dryer. They came out in May, told me that they needed to order parts. Parts took forever - Finally "fixed " my washer on June 10. It worked for 2 weeks. I ask them to comeback out and fix it - they said that since the original request was more than 30 days ago, that we need a new work order request and to pay again. They do not stand behind their repairs. Run to another provider or use Youtube and try to fix yourself. Even if you take your appliance out and use it for target practice, but will still be the same result as hiring these guys.

Where Is The Model Number
On A Maytag Washer?
The model number on a Maytag washer sits on the tub rim beneath the lid for a top load washer, and on the rim of the door opening for a front load washer. Our office prices special-order parts by model.
- On a stacked pair, open the dryer door. Maytag puts the tag for stacked laundry on the inside of the dryer door.
- On an all-in-one washer dryer, check the door frame. The tag sits on the frame, just inside the door.
- Take a photo of the label. Our office prices a special-order part by model, and the warranty that came with your washer may exclude a unit whose model or serial number has been removed, altered or can't be easily read.
Is Doctor Maintenance A Maytag Authorized Service Center?
No, Doctor Maintenance is not a Maytag authorized service center. We're an independent company. The Maytag laundry warranty asks for service from a Maytag designated service company, so a washer still covered by the warranty that came with it should go to Maytag first. Once the coverage ends, book a diagnosis with us.
Maytag says drn can sometimes be an installation problem, HC means the hot and cold hoses are reversed, F7 E1 asks about the shipping bolts, and F9 E1 can come down to the standpipe height, so several codes can trace back to how the washer was installed. Maytag's laundry warranty excludes service calls to correct the installation, which is why these get cleared first, even in year one.
If the warranty has ended, the washer came to you secondhand, or Maytag no longer covers the unit, book a $100 diagnosis. Doctor Maintenance repairs a Maytag washer wherever you bought it, on the same flat structure, a diagnosis first and then a repair price you approve before any work starts.
60-second quiz Is A Maytag Washer Worth Repairing?
The quiz asks how old your Maytag washer is, whether a warranty still covers it, how many repairs it's had and what it's doing now. Answer all eight questions and the quiz tells you whether to repair the washer or replace it.
Are Maytag And Whirlpool
The Same Company?
Yes, Maytag is a brand of Whirlpool Corporation, which also builds KitchenAid, JennAir, Amana and Roper. Our Whirlpool appliance repair page covers the family and the washer codes that repeat across it.
Maytag appliance repair works the same way across the rest of the line, with a $100 visit and diagnosis first, then a repair price you approve before the work starts. That includes a Maytag dryer on its own, a stacked Maytag washer dryer pair, a Maytag refrigerator and other Maytag appliances across the kitchen and laundry. Dryers and ovens have their own pages, dryer repair in Baltimore and oven repair.
Our post asking is it worth repairing a washing machine works through a washer's age and the repair cost together. The repair-or-replace quiz runs the numbers on your own washer, and our washing machine repair in Baltimore page covers every other brand.

Questions About Maytag Washer Repair
Is Doctor Maintenance an authorized Maytag service center?
No, Doctor Maintenance is an independent company and not a Maytag authorized service center. A Maytag washer still under warranty should go to Maytag first, since the warranty that came with it names who may service it. After the warranty ends, book a $100 diagnosis with us, and you approve the repair price before any work starts.
How much does Maytag washer repair cost?
Maytag washer repair with Doctor Maintenance starts at $100, which pays for the visit and a full diagnosis. A quick fix ends there. A larger repair gets one flat price that you approve before any work begins, and a special-order part gets an exact quote from our office first. If the technician finds nothing wrong, you get your $100 back.
Is it worth repairing a Maytag washer?
Repairing a Maytag washer is worth it when the fix costs well under half the price of a new washer, because you keep a machine you already own for far less. A diagnosis puts a real number on the repair, and our repair-or-replace quiz weighs that number against your washer's age.
What is the most common problem with a Maytag washer?
Draining, filling, load balance and the lid or door lock make up much of Maytag's own code lists for its washers. Each has a first step you can try yourself, such as checking the drain hose for drn or opening both faucets for LF, and a code that keeps returning after that step calls for a diagnosis.
What does drn mean on a Maytag washer?
The drn code on a Maytag washer means the washer isn't draining properly. Maytag says it can sometimes be an installation problem, so check the drain hose for kinks and how it sits in the standpipe first. If drn returns after that, a diagnosis looks at the drain pump, its filter and the control board, and the $100 covers that visit.
Why won't my Maytag washer spin?
A Maytag washer won't spin when the load is out of balance or too large, or when a front load washer can't confirm its motor speed. Ofb means spread the load around the washplate, OL means take items out and use HE detergent, and F7 E1 means confirm the shipping bolts are out and the drum isn't overloaded. A code that repeats after those steps is a reason to book.
Why won't my Maytag washer fill?
When a Maytag washer won't fill, too little water is reaching it, and Maytag's first step is to open both faucets fully, since hot and cold water must both be supplied. On a front load washer, Maytag adds checking the inlet hoses for kinks and taking out any anti-flood devices in the water line. Mineral scale on the inlet screens slows the flow too, which is why hard water matters.
Should I reset my Maytag washer before booking?
Resetting a Maytag washer before you book makes sense when it shows a system code. On a top load washer, press START/PAUSE once to clear an F code and again to restart. On a front load washer, Maytag says to unplug it for 5 minutes and plug it back in. If the code returns, book the diagnosis, and you get your $100 back if the technician finds nothing wrong.
Does Maytag's warranty cover my washer repair?
Maytag's warranty can cover a washer repair, but only while your washer is inside the terms of the warranty that came with it, and those terms vary by model. In Maytag's laundry limited warranty, year one pays for parts and labor, and years two through ten cover parts only on the drive motor and the stainless steel wash basket on the models that carry that term. Service goes through a Maytag designated service company, and Maytag asks for proof of the original purchase date.
Do I have to have bought my Maytag from you?
No, your Maytag doesn't have to come from Doctor Maintenance for us to repair it. Once the washer is out of warranty, Doctor Maintenance repairs a Maytag washer wherever you bought it, on the same terms: $100 for the visit and a full diagnosis, then a repair price that waits for your approval.
Where is the model number on a Maytag washer?
The model number on a Maytag top load washer is on the tub rim beneath the lid, and on a front load washer it's on the rim of the door opening inside the door. On a stacked pair the tag is inside the dryer door, and on an all-in-one washer dryer it's on the door frame. Photograph the tag, because our office prices a special-order part by model.
Are Maytag and Whirlpool the same company?
Yes, Maytag is a brand of Whirlpool Corporation, which also makes KitchenAid, JennAir, Amana and Roper appliances along with Whirlpool itself. Doctor Maintenance is an independent company, and a Maytag washer gets the same $100 diagnosis and the same flat repair price, approved first, as any other washer we repair.
Do you repair top-load and front-load Maytag washers?
Yes, Doctor Maintenance repairs both top load and front load Maytag washers, along with a stacked Maytag washer dryer pair. Maytag publishes a separate code list for top load HE washers and for front load washers, 11 codes apiece, and the first steps differ between them. Both types get the same $100 visit and the same flat repair price, approved by you first.
What happens if the technician finds nothing wrong?
You get your $100 back if the technician finds nothing wrong with your Maytag washer. The $100 pays for the visit and a full diagnosis, and the refund covers a diagnosis that turns up no problem. Any repair price is a separate number that waits for your approval.
When can you come out?
